Gardening Bulbs – Proven Planting Methods Of The Flower Bulbs That Will Blossom In Spring
narcissus bulbs

If you want bulb flowers to blossom in spring, you need to plant gardening bulbs in September or October, and for sure before first light morning or night frost. This rule is correct for Northern hemisphere and Southern hemisphere where there are such things like night or light morning frost.

During selection of the bulbs for your garden pay attention on the size of bulbs. In most cases follow this rule: the bigger the bulb the better blossom! If you are buying bulb tuber – its size is defined by its diameter, not its height.

Most bulbs must be in a dormancy condition, but some of them, like Crocosmia, are an exception to the rule – its bulbs can be sold with leaves. Gardening bulbs must be free from damage with clean surface. Stem of the bulb must be solid and without signs of roots and rottenness. If bulb is soft and its stem is soft as well, if you can see sprouts, and surface of the bulb is shrunken – it means, that this bulb is low quality and you will not grow good plant from it.

Each bulb plant blooms in certain period of time and if you pay attention to this you will get pleasure of blossoming bulb flowers from the very first moments of the spring.

          ]]>

Galanthus is the first bulb flower that starts blooming. Crocus, Narcissus, Chinodoxa and the early Tulips will follow after them. Muscari, Tulips, Fritillaria start blooming in April and May. Allium usually flowers from the middle of May and till end of July.
If you choose you bulb flowers correct you may admire the scenery of the blossoming garden for several months from the very end of winter and till middle of the summer.

You need to make soil light thoroughly before the planting, and if in need – add some compost. Then, using bulb planter, dig the hole and put bigger flower bulb in it (in order to set it straight); it is possible to sow smaller bulbs.

There is a rule, regarding to planting depth: gardening bulb must be planted in a depth, twice the size its height. Flowers that have bigger bulbs, like Narcissus, Tulip and Hyacinthus, planting depth must be from 15 to 20 centimeters. For flowers with smaller size bulbs, like Galanthus or Crocus, planting depth must be about 5 -10 centimeters.

You need to make bigger distance between bulbs that bigger the size, than for smaller bulbs. Big should be planted in a distance of 12 centimeters from each other and the smaller bulbs about 5 7 centimeters from one another.

Sandy soil lets water through very well and from the other side clay soil stays wet for very long time. Gardening bulbs do not like when they are kept in wet conditions, so if such a case, you need to think about good flow-out of the water.
It is possible to make clay soil more airy and light by adding sand or compost there. You may add small size gravel into the hole before putting a bulb there.

After planting bulbs, you need to water them straight away this will make growing roots faster. The faster roots will appear the stronger and more stable will be bulb before cold and wet season and winter time.

When autumn rains will start you need to stop watering your garden, of course. If there is strong frost and there is no snow cover, you have to cover planted gardening bulbs by leaves, fir branches or straw.

CROCUS: Crocus plants are relatively small, reaching just 3-6 inches in height (depending on the variety). The leaves are grass-like, generally with a light stripe running up the middle. Many of the spring-flowering crocus bulbs are among the earliest bloomers. The blooms pucker up at night and re-open in the morning. Remembrance Crocus: There is nothing better after a long winter than to see the first crocus poking their heads through the soil. A terrific naturalizer, crocus may be planted en masse in lawns (that do not need early mowing), in rock gardens and as colorful drifts in early garden beds.

Blooms add colour to autumn gardens
crocus bulbs
Some had the usual, small, crocus-like flowers, while others had huge blooms. My friend called them all “fall crocus“. What are these flower bulbs, and when can they be purchased and planted? A. The small flowers were fallblooming crocus. …

crocus bulbs question by courage: How long do you keep Daffodil bulbs and Crocus bulbs in the refrigerator when forcing Blooms?
I want to force daffodil and crocus blooms. How long do i keep them in the refrigerator?

I’ve never done it myself but I’ve read that they like about 6 weeks to simulate a real winter. Good luck!

well i bought these crocus plants last year and they were sprouting then bloomed.so when the flowers died off i put the bulbs in the fridge.all spring bulbs need to be stored in the fridge when done blooming.then when you are ready to plant them in the ground or indoor force which i have done they will be chilled.so hopefully this experiment will work out for me.several years ago i had daffodil bulbs blooming in a bag in the front hall were its very cold and has no heat.so i indoor forced them and came up with dozens of beautiful daffodils! it was like i bought bunches of them in pots!

Flower Bulbs
crocus bulbs

If you’re seriously interested in knowing about Bulb Flowers, you need to think beyond the basics. This informative article takes a closer look at things you need to know about Bulb Flowers.

Once you begin to move beyond basic background information, you begin to realize that there’s more to Bulb Flowers than you may have first thought.

Just about every flower gardener will work with bulb plants at one time or another. Bulbs are loved by gardeners for the ease with which they grow, their hardiness and the fact that they can bloom again and again for many consecutive seasons without the need to replant. With all these advantages, it is no wonder that bulb plants are so popular among both new and experienced gardeners.

Choosing the right bulbs, however, is one thing that many beginning gardeners have trouble with. After you develop and eye and feel for finding the best bulbs, however, you will be able to spot them from across the garden center.

When choosing bulbs for your garden, it is important to choose the firmest and largest bulbs. The size of the bulb is important, since large bulbs are more likely to provide many blooms. The firmness of the bulb is a good indication of its health, and bulbs that are soft or mushy are unlikely to bloom. Bulbs are particularly susceptible to water damage. It is important to choose a bulb that is not to soft, but it is also important to look for cracks or scars. Bulbs with cracks or scars may have become too dry to bloom. Likewise, any bulbs that have begun to spout roots should be avoided, as they are unlikely to bloom properly once planted.

]]>

How bulbs are planted in the garden is important as well. Most bulbs are best planted in the fall, most commonly in early to mid October. The goal is to get the bulbs into the ground six weeks before the ground begins to freeze, so obviously the best time to plant will vary from location to location.

Bulbs should be planted in a well prepared soil, and the depth they should be planted will be determined by the type of bulb. For example, crocus bulbs are generally planted four inches deep, daffodil and hyacinth bulbs six inches deep and tulip bulbs at a depth of eight inches.

A simple gardening tool called a bulb planter is great for achieving a more uniform look to the blooming garden. Bulb planters can be used to easily prepare perfect looking rows of flowers. Those gardneres who prefer a more wild and freewheeling look, on the other hand, often dig a single hole and plant several bulbs in it. This approach can lead to spectacular, if somewhat unpredictable, patterns once the bulbs begin to bloom.

It is important to use a small amount of fertilizer at the bottom of each hole you dig when planting bulbs. The fertilizer should then be topped with a thin layer of soil, and the bulb carefully placed on top of the soil. It is important not to place the bulb directly on top of the fertilizer, as doing so could damage the bulb. Bulbs are always planted with the pointed end stick up and the flat, rooted side lying on top of the layer of soil. After the bulbs are in place, the rest of the hole should be filled with soil and the garden should be given a thorough watering.

Even though bulbs are among the hardiest of garden plants, there are a few important things to remember. One important technique to become familiar with is deadheading. The term deadheading should already be familiar to those gardeners who work with perennials. Deadheading is simply removing spent blooms in order to encourage more blossoms to develop. This process is important with bulb plants as well. When working with bulbs, however, it is important not to remove the leaves from the plants until the leaves have begun turning brown.

Taking care of the bulbs over the winter is important as well. In warmer climates, many bulbs can remain in the ground over winter. It is important, however, to remove tender bulbs such as dahlias, even in warmer climates. These bulbs should be stored over the winter in a cool, dry location.

Bulbs are wonderful plants for any gardener, from the newest to the most experienced. Their combination of hardiness, color and beauty make them hard to beat for any flower enthusiast.

Take time to consider the points presented above. What you learn may help you overcome your hesitation to take action.

crocus bulbs question by menotyou: Can I plant crocus bulbs in the winter?
I want to plant crocus bulbs for spring bloom, but I missed the boat as far as the fall planting goes. Is there any other option? Can I plant them now, or whenever I can get a shovel in the dirt? How about growing in a pot? Would that work?? Thanks!

When the air begins to get cooler, and the leaves start to fall from the trees, most people immediately think of storing the gardening supplies for the winter and getting ready to bundle up. But Wait! Before packing away your gardening equipment, don’t forget to pick up some tulip bulbs to plant in your garden. Fall is the perfect time for planting tulip bulbs.

Tulip bulbs are easily the most recognizable bulb flower in the world today. Most people think first of a tulip, when they are asked to name a flower bulb. Tulips are easy to grow, and require very little care, which is one of the reasons that they are so popular.

]]>

There is a very large variety in the color selection of tulip bulbs. The colors of tulips typically follow the color trends that are generally popular. Right now, pastel tulips are extremely popular color choices. The most popular tulip color has always been, and remains to be red. However, red is followed closely by yellow as the second most popular color.

Of course, you can find tulips in a variety of color as there are over 3500 varieties of tulips. You can purchase traditional tulip bulbs as well as fancy bulbs, which have a feathered, frilly petal. You can find tulips in solid colors as well as striped petals, or variegated colors.

You can purchase tulip bulbs that are early bloomers, maturing early in the springtime, or you can find tulips that will bloom later. So you can plan your bulb flowers so that you will consistently have flower blooms all spring, until your perennials begin blooming. Tulips come in tall varieties as well as shorter varieties, this can be important when you are planning a garden design. As well, you will have a choice between single blooming tulips and double bloomers.

With so much variety and selection, it is no doubt why tulip bulbs are such popular flowers. Coupled with the excellent selection and the ease of care and planting for tulips, they make an excellent addition to any garden design. Tulips look wonderful in both formal garden designs as well as informal styles.
